Dr. Roland Meighan – 1937-2014We here at Life Learning Magazine are sad to announce the passing of British educational visionary and writer Roland Meighan, who died on January 20, 2014, of heart failure after a few weeks in the hospital. Dr. Meighan was a self-described “educational heretic” who believed that mass compulsory schooling is an obsolete, counterproductive learning system which abuses human rights and should be phased out as soon as possible. He believed that schools should be recycled as part of a flexible learning system that is invitational and learner-directed. Author of more than ten books, contributor to and publisher of many more, and writer of hundreds of articles, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Director of Educational Heretics Press, Director/Trustee of the Centre for Personalised Education Trust Ltd., and formerly Special Professor of Education at the University of Nottingham, UK. He was a prolific writer and we are proud to have had the privilege to publish some of his essays. Among his articles for Life Learning Magazine were:
